If you are experiencing bobbin thread coming to the top of the fabric, then there are a few possible causes, each of which has an easy solution.

The possible causes to Bobbin Thread showing on the top of the fabric are:

  1. The top thread tension is too tight.
  2. the bobbin thread is not in the bobbin case tension.
  3. the top thread is getting caught/obstructed.

1. The Top Thread Tension is Too Tight.

For a majority of materials and applications, it is recommended to use a top thread tension of "4" or "Auto". Should your thread tension dial be set to a different number, move the dial back to the default and try again.

2. The Bobbin Thread is not in the Bobbin Case Tension

To ensure the threading of your bobbin case is correct, please follow the Bobbin Threading Guide (for front-loading models, click here):

  1. Place a bobbin in the bobbin holder with the thread running off counterclockwise.
  2. Guide the thread into the first notch on the front side of the bobbin holder.
  3. Draw the thread to the left, sliding it between the tension spring blades.
  4. Continue to draw the thread lightly until the thread slips into the second notch. Then draw (pull) out about 15cm (6") of thread.
  5. Attach the hook cover (Bobbin Cover) Plate. Check the threading by referring to the diagram shown on the hook cover plate.

3. The Top Thread is Getting Caught/Obstructed

This can be caused if the top thread tension is too tight, or if the bobbin thread is not in the bobbin case tension.

Check that the upper thread is feeding freely without being obstructed by the oversized or rough spool caps,  or spools. If the thread is getting caught on the spool cap, try using the Small Spool Cap.
